Permanent Laser Hair Reduction

Using the newest technology, the Fotona Laser system, the Esteem Medical Spa team can reduce unwanted hair, whether its underarms, legs, back or face.

If you are sick of the way your body hair "busts" through your garments or sick of comments on your dark facial or arm hair or are tired of wasting time shaving every single day just to keep up with new growth - give laser hair removal a try. You might be surprised how easy and painless it is to permanently reduce or remove unwanted body or facial hair.

There are two types of lasers used for permanent hair removal.

The older IPL lasers send a gentle beam of laser energy through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed by melanin, the dark pigment found in some hairs. This energy is transformed to heat, which destroys the dark hair at its follicle, preventing new hair from growing.

The new technology of Fotona lasers also sends a painless gentle beam of energy through the skin. However, it is absorbed predominantly by the red blood that supplies the follicle, causing the interuption of blood supply and subsequent follicle death some two weeks post-treatment. It has been estimated that less than 30% of the beam is absorbed by melanin in the hair, while more than 70% of the energy interupts the blood supply.

Why does this make a difference?

The older laser system produces a beam that is naturally attracted to dark colors. Their best candidates were those with very light skin and dark hair. Those with darker skin benifited less because the darker the skin pigment the more energy is absorbed by the skin (causing burns), and less was available to treat the hair follicle.

Because this type of laser hair removal is caused by energy absorbed by dark pigment only, it also usually did not work with red, light colored or grey hair. To avoid burning or ineffectiveness, patients with darker skins, or light colored hair were advised to choose an alternate method of hair removal, such as electrolysis.

FOTONA LASER

Our Fotona lasers work well on all skin colors, regardless of hair pigment. Light colored and red hair can be permanently removed, but at a slightly slower rate than darker hair.

All laser systems on the market today only direct their energies toward hair follicles that are in the growing phase, known as Anagen phase. These follicles have an intact circulation which feeds them, and the hairs in the follicles contain melanin. Only 10% to 50% of all hair follicles, depending on body part, are in Anagen phase at any one time. For this reason, most patients require 3 to 8 treatments, 6 to 8 weeks apart, over a period of 10 to 24 months.

Laser hair removal is painless and only an external cooling device and conducting gel is required for comfort. It is an extremely safe and fast process that involves no recovery time. Some redness and swelling may occur at the time of treatment, but these disappear quickly. Compared to other hair removal options, laser treatment is much more comfortable and effective.

Laser Hair Removal Facts:

1) About 1.4 million people received laser hair removal in 2004, making it second only to Botox as the most requested procedure. (Amer. Soc. for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery)

2) Many men have had chest and/or back hair removed permanently by laser treatments. The treatments have become much faster and a back can now be treated in less than an hour...painlessly! Remember the movie "The 40 year old virgin"? Who, of sound mind, would volunteer for such torture? Quick and painless sounds better all the time guys!

3) Normal hair growth has 3 cycles. As a result, all patients must return at least 3, and preferably 6 times to achieve the desired results. With time, new hair follicles are brought into play. Even though this treatment permanently removes the old follicles, up to 30% of your hair will emerge over the rest of your life through this process of new follicle development. For this reason, periodic "touch-up" sessions are recommended every 6 to 24 months, depending on your rate of new hair growth. This is also why the more accurate description of this procedure is Permanent Hair Reduction, instead of removal.

4) Blonde, grey and red hair colors may take a little longer to achieve permanant results, because of their lack of pigment. Using our Fotona lasers, the treatment is totally safe for ALL skin colors.

5) Laser Hair removal can be done on any body part. On the head, the common areas include face, sideburns, chin, upper lip, eyebrows and neck. On the body, the most commonly treated areas are the underarms, arms, bikini line, legs, chest, and back.

6) The latest application of this technology is to treat the entire pubic area, known as the "lazer brazilian", or if treatment is for a man, it is referred to as the "lazer boyzilian".
